Swapping one magazine for another one, while holding onto the first magazine is called tactical reload. It's done when a shooter has used a few rounds out of a magazine, but wants to go into the next situation fully loaded. This technique is important for military and competition shooters, but the jury is still out on whether it is really vital for the rest of us.

Mastering the tactical and emergency (when your gun runs dry) reloading are essential skills. Tactical reloads come very much into play with multiple assailants, this is highly likely during a home invasion for instance, or if you're holding out in the safe room waiting for the cavalry.
