Paper targets are ok, but we can all agree that the reactive neon ones are better. However, if you really want to feel accomplished, shoot steel! Every ping of your bullets, may be one of the most gratifying sounds you ever hear while shooting. Unfortunately, many ranges don't allow the shooting of steel targets for fear of ricochet. But I've got another idea for you; you should check out
Ghost Targets. These are small chalk like cylinders that were specifically designed to "pouf" or puff when shot. They're not really clays, not really explosives, but they can add to your shooting experience and help you practice highly precise shot placement.
