Review: Wild West Traders, A Gun Store & Shooting Range

By Gabby

Wild West TradersI've visited a number of ranges around the country but when it came to local places, I think I've been remiss. So last week a friend and I went to an out-of-the-way place to see what was what. As a former range employee, I was intent on giving an unbiased, yet thorough review of Wild West Traders, a gun store and shooting range, and using my knowledge of the ins and outs of the business to sniff out any signs of impending doom.

We arrived on a thursday evening, hoping to take advantage of their weekly "Ladies Night". The deal gives ladies free range time with the purchase of ammo and targets. My partner in crime was immediately disappointed to find that they do not allow the firing of the Five-Seven round. We decided to stick to hand guns and had brought 9mm, .380 and .45 guns and rounds. We were hoping to purchase more 9mm rounds but were informed that the store was completely out. I can't blame WWT for this though, as this ammo shortage is still a nation wide epidemic. Unable to buy ammo, I wondered if the "Ladies Night" discount would still apply.

AR Build Diary

By Gabby

February:
• Found it helpful to mess around on this AR builder site, to get a sense of costs and tiers of quality within companies.
March:
• Still waiting on an upper receiver before they anodize, so I guess I'll look at what tools I might need:

Georgia's Carry Permit Laws, on my mind

By Gabby

Georgia's on my mind There is no doubt that if I had continued to live in New York City, as I did growing up, my life would be very different. I'm sure I would have never discovered my passion for guns and the shooting sports. I am thoroughly grateful that I live in Georgia now, and have the freedom to learn about all sorts of firearm systems and get a lot of hands on experience as well. Still, Georgia's relaxed stance on firearm permitting, doesn't always make me totally comfortable.

Private Gun Sales for Gun Nuts

Here is Gabby's Latests Post for Gun Nuts

Selling a gun... I once sold a gun in the parking lot of a famous Atlanta fast food establishment. I had met the buyer, negotiated and planned the transaction, all through a website, built specifically for this purpose. I knew that by selling this gun myself, rather than trading it in at a store, I would be able to get more cash for it.

Another Secret Keeper

By C-Mag

armedcandy writer is not a member of NRA
Gabby recently shared her lack of NRA membership, and reminded me of an experience that happened this year at SHOTShow.

I too, am not a members of the NRA, and know that I will not be joining the organization in the near future. Part of the reason I feel this way is due to a conversation I had, after a long day at SHOT. I hope that by sharing this experience, the eyes of some readers will be opened.

Seller's Remorse

By C-Mag

My old 15/22Gabby's recent article, Buyer's Remorse, made me realize my biggest problem with gun collecting; Seller's Remorse. Over the past few years I have purchased and then sold a number of guns, pistols and rifles. Rarely do I regret buying a gun, but I always seem to regret selling one. In fact, I regretted selling one gun so much that more than a year after I said farewell, I went and purchased another one.

Buyer's Remorse Part II

By Gabby

buyers remorseIn my last post I hoped to help you avoid the common pitfall of "Buyer's Remorse". What I failed to share was that I have been feeling the pangs of this miserable affliction for the past few months. I wouldn't call my condition a full blown case of "B-R" but I have been doing more reassessing of a gun purchase than makes me comfortable.

Dating for Gun Nuts

Gabby's most recent post for GunNuts:

20130317-222316.jpg"A few weekends ago, this happened:
I was driven an hour and a half into the Georgia mountains until we stopped at what seemed like a random turn off. We parked at the base of a chained driveway marked “Household trash must be in bags”. We hiked twenty minutes into the woods following a trail whose entrance was blocked by piles of branches and other natural items, intentionally placed there. We were each carrying about 30 pounds of gear, which made the barely walked trail even less navigable. At a bend in the trail just before the trail narrowed and the mountain curved up steeply, we stopped and dropped everything we were carrying.

"Now, at this point in the story you might be worried that I was about to become another missing girl, on whose computer, the FBI would find very interesting internet searches. But that wasn’t my concern at all."

Buyer's Remorse

By Gabby

Don't be a victim of buyers remorse Every woman knows the feeling...

She’s wearing and loving a new pair of shoes/jeans/purse and showing them off all over town, when she happens past a store window and spies a different pair of shoes/jeans/purse, that are even more fabulous.

What’s a girl to do?

Well, with shoes you know the rule, once they’ve walked outside, they are YOURS.
It turns out, guns are a lot like shoes.

Georgia Gun Laws May Change for Mentally Ill

By Gabby

State of Georgia may change gun laws for mentally ill
About a week ago, the Georgia House took a vote in relation to the state’s gun laws. The vote focused on those who had voluntarily checked themselves into inpatient care for mental illness or substance abuse. Passing 117-56, the legislature agreed to issue these people gun permits, as long as all other requirements were met. Permits for those who were involuntarily committed within the past five years, would still be up to the discretion of a county judge.*

It’s widely known that Georgia is a pretty gun friendly state, but since the Connecticut school shooting, most states have been tightening, rather than relaxing gun laws. While I have said, that GA’s gun laws make it a little too easy to get a firearm, I actually appreciate this recent change.

No Compromise... Really? for Gun Nuts

Gabby's Latest post for Gun Nuts:
Is "No Compromise" really our policy?

no compromise tantrum by pro gun rights side"No Compromise" This term keeps popping up in reference to gun laws and I find it limiting & upsetting. The mass shooting of babies is the kind of heinous act that makes people want to fix something in America. Whether you are of left or right political leanings, no one can deny that changes in our laws are happening and will continue to happen in response to these crimes.

Defined: Tactical Reload

Swapping one magazine for another one, while holding onto the first magazine is called tactical reload. It's done when a shooter has used a few rounds out of a magazine, but wants to go into the next situation fully loaded. This technique is important for military and competition shooters, but the jury is still out on whether it is really vital for the rest of us.

Second Amendment isn't Cutting it

By Gabby

#No one would ever call my family "liberal," politically speaking. And yet, my industry of choice, makes them extremely uncomfortable. The last thing I would want to do is hurt them, but I have found world for which I am passionate and it happens to need some vocal support in a politically turbulent time. I appreciate those who are outspoken about their love of America and The Constitution, and I know we are on the same side about keeping our freedom. However, there has been something bothering me for a number of months and it's time I got it off my chest.

Comments on My Secret

By Gabby

ArmedCandys Founder Gabby Marcuus is not a member of the NRAI must thank you all for your respectful comments to my last post: I Need to Share a Secret I’m thrilled that we can have an open discussion like this.  In today’s post, I thought I'd address some of your input.

Firstly, to those of you who asked for my reasons for not joining the NRA. I am far from shy, when it comes to policy issues on which I feel strongly, but to spell out these beliefs here, I fear, would derail this conversation. Therefore, please forgive this somewhat vague response to your request.

I Need to Share a Secret

By Gabby

# In January, I was heading for SHOTShow with excited anticipation, but also a little fear. I believed that there was one thing about me that could destroy my reputation with the firearm community. It was a secret I thought I needed to keep from all of them, imagining that if they knew, they would run me out of town.

A Survival Gun & Rifle for New Shooters, First Look: Chiappa's Little Badger

By Gabby

Chiappa Little BadgerBoy have times changed.
When my mom was young she went to day camp where they had an activity called “riflery”. The kids would get down on their bellies and shoot at targets, and that was New York state. Mom will even, remind us, now and then, that she was “a pretty good shot”. So why, as a strong woman, with her grown daughter as her guide, did my mother bail on me at the range after a few shots with a .22 lr target pistol? She said it made her too nervous and she would have preferred to shoot from the ground. (Among other reasons.) I am hoping that she will give me, and shooting, another chance.

Gun Nuts Post: Bad Gun Stores

Here is Gabby's latest post for Gun Nuts Media:

gun stores  Let’s be honest. Plenty of people who have guns, should not, and if they are not criminals then, chances are, they bought these guns legally. Brick and mortar gun stores are still our first, and best, line of defense against dangerous gun owners, but how many are doing the right by us? Being “legal” in the eyes of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is an intense process for an Federal Firearms License holder. Hours of paperwork and double checking is necessary to keep a store in good standings. However, even if all of this is being done, many stores may still lose sight of the fact, they are not selling just any sports equipment.
