Baby Shot and Killed in Georgia, Media Silent

By Gabby

baby, Antonio Santiago, shot in Brunswick GA
This post was written by an ArmedCandy reader who prefers to remain anonymous. The writer is a Georgia resident who helped the police of Brunswick build their case against the suspects. While some of the facts are yet to be known, it is clear that so far, the national media has not felt that this tragic death of a child, is worth of as much air time, if any, as another. If you finish reading and are outraged, please share.

No parent should ever have to bury their child, it is not the natural order of the world. The seaside town of Brunswick, GA was recently shocked by just such an event, and it shook every resident to thier core. Sherry West was pushing her 13 month old son, Antonio, in his stroller on a sunny day when she encountered two African American males. At gunpoint then two men demanded Ms. West's money, but she had nothing to give the two. So the robbers pulled a handgun and shot Sherry West in the leg and threatened to shoot the baby who lay asleep in his stroller. As Ms. West begged the men not to shoot again, one of the men shot Antonio Santiago in the head. The 13 month old died instantly. The shooters fled and a manhunt of massive proportions ensued.

Defined: Bullpup

bullpup rifle
A long gun built in this compact style is often offered as a solution for those who are moving within, or clearing, close quarter environments. (Often referred to as CQB or CQC, Close Quarter Battle or Combat.) This is done because a shorter rifle allows the user to enjoy the fire power of a larger gun, with the mobility something smaller. Both rifles and shotguns can be configured in the bullpup style, with the action and magazine set behind the trigger group. An example of such a gun is Israeli Weapons Industry's Tavor.

US Welcomes IWI's Tavor

By

Gabby shoots IWI Tavor Rifle at SHOTShow As SHOTShow approached, I began to make a list of weapons that I would like to test fire. Because we would have limited time at the range, there were some guns that I absolutely had to shoot and others that I'd only get to feel on the show floor. Without realizing it, I also created a series of expectations of what I would like and what I would dislike. The Tavor Rifle by IWI was low on my priority list. That may have been due to the negative influences that had influenced me, prior to SHOT. I had read a lot of negative reviews regarding bull-pup designs, 16"+ length barreled guns with the magazine located behind the trigger group. No gun writers were particularly complimentary of the trigger feel or general ergonomics. While I approached the IWI tent with trepidation, Gabby would not have left media day with out visiting "her people" so we waited on the long line.
...In spite of myself, the Tavor Rifle is now high on my must have list.[tweet this]

Let me tell you a little story:

I took drivers-education in New York City. Packed in a Nissan with four other 16 year old girls and an old Lithuanian man (instructor), our very first day behind the wheel was on the streets of manhattan; At least, it was the first time behind the wheel, for the other girls.

Buy a Gun, Learn to Shoot!

By Gabby

First Gun Purchase and training classes
I am overwhelmingly concerned with what happens after a new shooter buys their first gun. More and more people are going gun shopping now a days but with less concern for the next step. This issue is on my mind every time I am asked, "What gun should I buy first?"

Aurora Theater Shooting Rally for Vicitims, A Ploy

By Gabby

Aurora Theater shooting victims used to push Bloomberg's agenda
Yesterday, Saturday, was also the date of a rally in Aurora, Colorado to commemorate the victims of the movie theater shooting that occurred a year ago. This rally was organized by "Mayors Against Illegal Guns." The group is co-chaired by Mr. Bloomberg, Mayor of the city of New York.

Does anyone else see the problem here?

"Justice for Trayvon" Rally in Downtown Atlanta

By Gabby

Justice for Trayvon Martin Rally planned for downtown Atlanta Georgia, protest of gun laws unrelated
Today there is a rally planned in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is one of the many rallies, and protests, going on all over the country related to the trial State of Florida v. George Zimmerman*. The gatherings are focusing on a number of issues. The AP calls them 'Justice for Trayvon' rallies, and says that attendees will call for charges to be brought by the federal government, attention to racial tension and a re-examining of the "stand your ground" law, among other issues. (It was actually difficult to find ANY site that would list these rallies as anything other than "Justice for Trayvon" events, and explain exactly what those rallying hope to achieve.)

I hope those rallying can respect the justice system, even if they don't agree with the outcome, and be grateful for their constitutional right to gather. [tweet this]

Laserlyte Laser Training System Review

By Gabby

Laserlyte Laser training system reviewed by gabbyThe Laserlyte laser training system has improved greatly from the system I used last year. New targets are smaller and offer two modes. They are better at "registering" shots and now offer many different ways to train. The barrel insert Laser Trainer Pro is great, especially because it can be used in any gun from .35 to .45 caliber. Just don't forget to remove the batteries when you're not using it, or you'll need to go buy new ones. Here's a video review for even more details.

"Dear G+Abby" = advice + guns, for Gun Nuts

By Gabby for Gun Nuts

emails from readers with personal issues related to guns, answered hereOver the years I have posted a bit about the personal stuff that I have run into, as it relates to guns. In the past, articles have covered topics like, my non-gun-loving family, introducing friends to shooting, and every now and then, I even let you in on some of my dating experiences. Well, last week I posted one such dating discussion that got a lot of you talking, and, it seems, emailing too. I got so many emails in fact, it gave me an idea... Every one has heard of the old advice column, "Dear Abby" but what if her advice centered around the personal issues of guns? Hence, I've come up with, "Dear G+Abby"! But I don't need to explain this to you, when I can just show you what I mean.

Purse Holstering by Sassy Shooting Accessories, A Review

By Gabby

I received this little gadget a while ago and have been trying to decide how I feel about it ever since. The Sassy Shooter Purse Insert, is a fashionable little holster for a woman who is not willing to compromise and I really appreciate this about the design. Using fun fabrics, the insert appears to be just another makeup case in a woman's bag. This might allow the insert to be used in a purse that doesn't zip closed, or in a beach bag.

My Favorite Pistol Grip

By Gabby

proper grip for semiautomatic handgunsAs promised, here is the grip that I have found to work best for me. I use this grip on any semi automatic pistol I handle, and find it especially handy for small guns, like the Ruger LCP that caused inspired last week's discussion about slide bites. With a small pistol, especially, you want to have as much skin in contact with it as possible. This is hard to dod with a small gun, especially for me and my long fingers; I often feel like I my hands are wrapped around a grip, bun not actually touching anything. However, I have found that by using the natural anatomy and shape of my hands, I can get control in all the right places.

Injury at the range: Slide Bite

By Gabby

One of the most important items in my range bag, is a first aid kit. Now, you might be thinking, Gabby!!! Don't bring that up, you'll scare people!!!
crossing one's thumbs when gripping a pistol can be a painful experience
But if you're thinking that, then you might still be of the thinking that I shouldn't handle guns because one might go off and hurt me. And we all know that's silly, because guns don't just, go off and when handled safely and with respect, they can be lots of fun.
But yes, I do keep a first aid kit in my range bag, and I do so for the same reason I keep a jack in my car, a mint in my purse, or a gun on my hip... You never know what might happen.

Further, when you're handling dirty metal parts and greasy stuff, bumps and cuts can be even more hazardous and quick attention may be required. That being said, I only needed my first aid kit for this first time, last week... But it happened to be a doozy!

(Warning: The following contains pictures of an injury sustained at the range by a friend of mine. I have made them small, and placed them at the bottom, so that if you prefer to avoid looking at them, you may still read this article. To enlarge each photo simply click it.)

Dating and Guns, for Gun Nuts

By Gabby for Gun Nuts

dating guns and menI've noticed a trend in my life. As a single girl, I occasionally meet men who ask me out. (Keep reading, that's not the trend...) Most of these men only stay in my life for a meal or two, sometimes even less (coffee dates). However, the ones that stick around for a little while longer, tend to be pretty engrossed in the gun world.

AR Build Diary: Stock Installation

By Gabby

I can't believe I closed the AR Build Diary without installing the stock for y'all! Fortunately it's a very simple job. Once you've got the buffer tube on, the stock will just slide on, as long as you've moved the plunger out of the way. An extra pair of hands or a bench vise might be helpful, but I managed with out either. Watch this little video for more details.
